EC Marketing Standards for Fresh Horticultural Produce

Commission Implementing EU Regulation 543/2011

A new EU Regulation (543/2011) on marketing standards for fresh fruit and vegetables applies from 22 June 2011. This regulation supercedes EC Regulation 1580/2007.
EU Regulation 543/2011 contains the 10 specific marketing standards applying to Apples, Citrus (including clementines, satsumas, oranges, lemons and mandarins), Kiwi Fruit, Lettuce (incuding curled and broad leaved endives), Peaches and Nectarines, Pears, Strawberries, Sweet Peppers, Table Grapes and Tomatoes. As well as the general marketing standard that applies to most other fresh fruit and vegetables.

All these standards have been updated and are now as far as possible in line with the internationally agreed UNECE standards.
This means that in many areas the standards have been simplified. Examples of simplification are:

  • Citrus - Sizing requirements allow sizing based on uniformity not on rigid size codes,
  • Lettuce - Deletion of all minimum sizes,
  • Peaches and nectarines - Areas of skin defects allowed are increased,
  • Pears - Sizing by weight is added,
  • Sweet Peppers - Skin defect areas allowed are increased,
  • Table Grapes - Minimum bunch weight is reduced,
  • Tomatoes - Simplification of sizing requirements.
